Gothic Font Generator

You want your gamer tag, Discord name or bio to look like the logo on a metal band's T-shirt. Type it below and this gothic font generator turns it into blackletter you can copy and paste: ๐•น๐–Ž๐–Œ๐–๐–™ ๐•ฝ๐–†๐–›๐–Š๐–“, ๐”‘๐”ฆ๐”ค๐”ฅ๐”ฑ โ„œ๐”ž๐”ณ๐”ข๐”ซ or a framed version. The black panel shows it at logo size first, so you can judge it before you commit.

Where does gothic text work, and where is it blocked?

Gothic letters are Unicode characters, not a font, so they paste anywhere that accepts text. Some places still turn them away:

  • โœ“ Display names on Discord, TikTok, X and the Instagram name field.
  • โœ“ Bios, captions, comments and chats. Short words look best; a whole paragraph gets tiring to read.
  • โœ“ Game names in some games. Others only allow plain letters and numbers, so try it before you spend anything on a rename.
  • โœ— @usernames and handles. Instagram, TikTok and Discord usernames take plain letters, numbers and a few marks only.
  • โœ— Anything that has to be read aloud or found. Screen readers may announce each letter by its Unicode name, like โ€œmathematical bold Fraktur capital Nโ€, or skip it. In-app search often wonโ€™t match it to normal letters either.
  • โœ— Print logos and merch. Use a real blackletter font file for anything printed. More on that below.

What's in the 14 styles, so the count means something: all 14 are blackletter. Four are the core alphabets, the light Old English and Bold Gothic, each with a version that adds matching bold numbers. The other ten are those same letters decorated: crowns, crossed swords, a skull, frames, an underline and an outline mix. No serif, no script, no filler from other font families.

Gothic, blackletter, Old English, Fraktur: which name is right?

All four labels point at the same family of medieval lettering, but they aren't interchangeable:

  • Blackletter is the family name, the umbrella term for the dense, angular scripts of medieval Europe. Textura, Rotunda, Schwabacher and Fraktur are its historical sub-families (the tattoo section below gives each one a line).
  • Gothic is the older everyday synonym for the same scripts. Renaissance writers used it as an insult, meaning barbaric and old-fashioned, and the name stuck.
  • Old English is the popular label for the look in font menus and generator names. It describes the lettering only. It has nothing to do with the Old English language, which is far older.
  • Fraktur is the specific sub-family the copy-and-paste letters come from. The Unicode alphabets in the tool above are mathematical Fraktur letters, plus the five older capitals explained further down.

So when a generator says gothic, blackletter or Old English, it is selling the same letters under a different label. The style differences that matter are light versus bold, and plain versus decorated.

Which gothic style suits which name?

Bold Gothic is the safe default: heavy enough to read beside a small avatar, and every letter matches. The light Old English style looks more elegant in longer words but gets thin on small screens. Symbols like swords and skulls add attitude, but they also eat into a nameโ€™s character limit. A few made-up names to show the range:

Two rules cover most disappointments. First, size: blackletter is the hardest Latin lettering to read small, so anything read at member-list or avatar size (display names, gamer tags) wants Bold Gothic and a few words at most; save the light style for big display text like a server title or a bio headline. Second, risk: the framed and symbol styles are built from combining marks and ornaments, so they are the ones most likely to stack oddly or break on an older phone. The plain alphabets are the safe travellers. Whichever style you pick, check it on a second device before you rename anything you can't easily change back.

Looking for Victorian gothic letters? That name usually means the ornate blackletter on 19th-century shop signs and posters. Unicode has no separate Victorian alphabet, so the closest copy-and-paste match is Bold Gothic, framed with a symbol style like Crown Gothic.

Why do five letters look different?

Type CHIRZ into the light Old English style and five capitals look slightly off. That isnโ€™t your phone. When Unicode added a full blackletter alphabet for mathematics in 2001, these five already existed in an older block called Letterlike Symbols, so Unicode reused them instead of encoding them twice. Theyโ€™re drawn from a different part of your phoneโ€™s fonts, which is why their size and weight can clash.

โ„ญ โ†’ ๐•ฎCโ„Œ โ†’ ๐•ณHโ„‘ โ†’ ๐•ดIโ„œ โ†’ ๐•ฝRโ„จ โ†’ ๐–…Z

The fix is Bold Gothic. Its whole alphabet sits in one block, so every capital matches.

Can you get gothic numbers?

Not true ones. Unicode includes bold, outline, sans-serif and typewriter digits for maths, but no blackletter digits at all. Most generators leave numbers plain, so โ€œRaven 666โ€ ends up half gothic. Our Old English + Numbers and Bold Gothic + Numbers styles pair the letters with bold serif digits, ๐•ฝ๐–†๐–›๐–Š๐–“ ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”, which share the same heavy, formal weight.

Planning a gothic tattoo?

Use this page to try out the wording, not as the final artwork.

What you copy here are characters that each phone and computer draws in its own way. Your tattoo artist needs a real blackletter font file, or will draw the letters by hand.

It helps to know the names of the four main blackletter families when you talk to the artist:

  • Textura: tall, narrow and very regular. Gutenberg printed his Bible in this style.
  • Rotunda: rounder and more open than Textura.
  • Schwabacher: from early German printing, with rounder letters than Fraktur.
  • Fraktur: broken, curly strokes. The light โ€œOld Englishโ€ letters on this page are based on it.

Where did blackletter come from?

Blackletter was the standard book script of Western Europe from roughly the late 1100s to the 1600s, and Johannes Gutenberg printed his 42-line Bible in a blackletter type in the 1450s. Germany kept Fraktur in daily use far longer, until the Nazi government suddenly banned it in 1941 with the false claim that it was โ€œJewish lettersโ€. Today you see it on newspaper mastheads such as The New York Times, on diplomas, beer labels and plenty of metal band logos. And despite the nickname, it has nothing to do with the Old English language, which is centuries older, as Wikipediaโ€™s blackletter article points out.

Before you paste

  • โ˜ Open it on a second phone. Older devices sometimes show a box instead of a letter.
  • โ˜ Keep your @username plain and put the gothic version in your display name.
  • โ˜ Leave the important bits, like your real name or a link, in normal text for screen readers.
  • โ˜ Check the length. A Discord display name allows 32 characters and a TikTok name 30; the preview panel counts for you.
  • โ˜ Capitals look uneven? Switch from Old English to Bold Gothic.

Want the words themselves changed, not just the lettering? The Old English translator turns modern wording into old-style โ€œthou artโ€ phrasing. (True Old English is older again, the language of Beowulf. This page only deals with how words look.)

Gothic font questions

Is this gothic font generator free?

Yes, completely. No sign-up, no watermark, no limit on how much text you convert, and nothing to install.

Is gothic text a font I have to install?

No. What the generator makes is Unicode characters, not a font file. Each blackletter letter is a separate character your phone already knows, which is why the look survives copy and paste into apps with no font menu. For a printed logo, merch or anything that has to stay sharp at large sizes, you need a real blackletter font file instead.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion happens in your browser, on your device. What you type is never sent to a server, so names and drafts stay private.

Why do numbers stay plain in gothic text?

Unicode has no blackletter digits at all, so most generators leave numbers as they are and "Raven 666" comes out half styled. The Old English + Numbers and Bold Gothic + Numbers styles in the tool work around it by pairing the letters with bold digits of a similar heavy weight, so the numbers match.

Why do some gothic capital letters look different?

In the light Old English style, five capitals (C, H, I, R and Z) come from an older Unicode block than the rest of the alphabet, so some phones draw them at a slightly different size or weight, and old devices can show a box. Bold Gothic was encoded as one complete alphabet, so every letter matches. If your name contains one of those capitals and it looks off, switch to Bold Gothic.

Does gothic text work on Discord and Instagram?

Yes, in display names, server nicknames, bios, captions and comments. It does not work in @usernames or handles anywhere: those take plain letters, numbers and a few marks only. Keep your username plain and put the gothic version in your display name.

Can I use gothic text for a tattoo?

To try out the wording, yes. As the final artwork, no. These letters are characters each device draws in its own way, and a tattoo needs stable artwork. Show your artist the name and the style you like, and they will work from a real blackletter typeface or draw the letters by hand. Knowing the family names helps: Textura, Rotunda, Schwabacher and Fraktur are the four classic blackletter families.

Is this the Old English language?

No. Old English is a language, the one Beowulf was written in, centuries older than this lettering. Gothic, blackletter and "Old English" as font names are all labels for the same medieval lettering style; the letters you copy here are the Fraktur form of it. If you want your words themselves turned into old-style wording, use the Old English translator page instead.
