Discord text formatting commands
Type these around your text in any message. Discord formats it when you hit send.
| Effect | Type this |
|---|---|
| Bold | **text** |
| Italic | *text* or _text_ |
| Underline | __text__ |
~~text~~ | |
| Spoiler (hidden until clicked) | ||text|| |
| Big, medium and small heading | # text, ## text, ### text |
| Small grey subtext | -# text |
| Quote one line / the rest of the message | > text / >>> text |
| Bulleted list | - item on each line |
| Link with custom text | [text](https://example.com) |
| Inline code / code block | `text` / three backticks before and after |
You can stack them: ***text*** gives bold italic and __**text**__ gives bold underline. Headings and subtext only work at the very start of a line and need a space after the symbol.
Fonts vs commands: where each works
Commands are formatting, so they only work where Discord renders it. Copy-and-paste fonts are characters, so they work in more places, but not everywhere.
| Where | Commands | Copy-and-paste fonts |
|---|---|---|
| Messages | Yes | Yes |
| Display name | No, shown as symbols | Yes |
| Server nickname | No | Yes |
| Username | No | No. 2โ32 characters: lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods |
So the usual setup is a plain username, a styled display name, and commands for formatting your messages.
What font does Discord use?
Discord's app uses gg sans, a typeface Discord made for itself and switched to on 1 December 2022. It replaced Whitney, the font the app used before. The name comes from "gg", gaming slang for "good game". Discord's logo and marketing use a different family called Ginto.
You can't swap gg sans for another font inside Discord, but you can change the text size underUser Settings โ Appearance. To change how your name looks to everyone else, use a copy-and-paste style from the tool above.
Coloured text in Discord (desktop and web)
Discord has no colour command, but code blocks labelled ansi can show coloured text. The catch is that each colour needs an invisible "escape" character you can't type on a keyboard. Tap a template below to copy it with the escape characters included, paste it into Discord, and replace Your text here.
Colours show on the desktop app and in the browser. On phones the same message shows as a plain grey code block, so don't rely on colour alone to carry meaning.
Fonts for channel and category names
Server owners style channel lists with emoji and dividers, like ๐ขใปannouncements or๐ฌโgeneral. Text channel names have stricter rules than display names: Discord turns spaces into hyphens, forces lowercase and strips some special characters. Emoji and dividers like ใป and โ usually survive. Preview the name before saving, and keep the words themselves plain so members can find channels with search.
Your Discord bio (About Me)
The About Me box holds 190 characters, with or without Nitro. Styled letters, symbols and emoji all work there, so it's a good place for a cursive tagline or a small-caps list of your games. Because the space is tight, style one short line and keep links and other details plain.
Tips for a Discord display name
- Gothic, bold and small caps read best in the member list, where names are small and crowded.
- Watch the length. Frames like ๊ง ๊ง use characters you might want for your name, and some styled letters count double toward limits.
- Check server rules. Some servers ask for readable or mentionable names, and moderators may reset styled nicknames.
Discord font questions
Do I need Discord Nitro to use these fonts?
No. Copy-and-paste fonts are ordinary Unicode characters, so they work on free accounts on desktop, mobile and the web.
Why does creepy text get cut off in Discord?
Creepy (Zalgo) text stacks marks above and below each letter. Discord limits how tall a line can grow, so heavy versions get clipped and can overlap nearby messages. Use the lighter Glitch style for names.
Can I change the colour of my text on Discord?
There's no colour command for normal messages. On desktop, code blocks marked as ansi can show coloured text using ANSI colour codes, but it's fiddly and doesn't display the same on every device.
